How Mercari fees work in practice

Mercari is simpler than most marketplaces. Since January 6, 2025, a seller pays one fee on new and updated listings: 10% of the item price plus any shipping the buyer pays. There is no separate payment processing fee on top. Listing is free, and you only pay when something sells.

The part people miss is the shipping line. If you charge the buyer $10 for shipping on a $50 item, the 10% fee is worked out on $60, not $50. That is $6.00 instead of $5.00. It is not a big difference on one sale, but it adds up if you sell often and pass shipping costs to buyers. Offering free shipping removes shipping from the fee base, though you still pay the carrier yourself.

Buyers pay their own 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on item price plus shipping. That fee is not taken from you, but it makes your listing a little more expensive at checkout. If you are competing against a similar item on another site, keep it in mind when you price.

Getting your money is free if you wait. Direct Deposit to your bank costs $0. Instant Pay costs a flat $3.00 per cash-out and has a $600 monthly limit, so it only makes sense when you need the cash now. The calculator lets you toggle it so you can see its effect on a small sale.

Your real profit also depends on things Mercari does not charge you for: what you paid for the item, packaging, and the label. Mercari prepaid shipping labels use fixed rates that change, so enter your own number rather than trusting an old price. Finally, shipping with the wrong packaging, or sending prohibited items by Media Mail, can lead to extra charges deducted from your balance, so follow the label rules.

Three worked examples

1. A $30 item with free shipping

You list at $30.00 and pay $8.00 to ship it. The fee is 10% of $30.00, or $3.00. You keep $19.00, before subtracting what you paid for the item.

2. A $50 item where the buyer pays $10 shipping

The fee base is $60.00, so the fee is $6.00. Shipping costs you $10.00, which the buyer’s payment covers. You keep $44.00, before item cost. Compared with free shipping at the same price, the fee is $1.00 higher.

3. A $20 item with Instant Pay

Item $20.00, buyer pays $6.00 shipping that costs you $6.00. The fee is $2.60. If you cash out that sale on its own with Instant Pay, another $3.00 goes. You keep $14.40, before item cost. On a small sale the Instant Pay fee takes a visible bite, so batching cash-outs by Direct Deposit is cheaper.

Questions sellers ask

What is the Mercari selling fee?

Mercari charges sellers 10% of the item price plus any shipping the buyer pays. It is only charged when an item sells. Listing is free.

Is there a payment processing fee for sellers?

Not a separate one. Mercari’s help page says no separate payment processing fee applies on listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025.

Does the 10% fee apply to shipping?

Yes, to shipping the buyer pays. Mercari lists the fee base as the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. If you offer free shipping, there is no buyer-paid shipping to add, but you pay the carrier out of your own proceeds.

Does the buyer’s 3.6% fee come out of my money?

No. The 3.6% Buyer Protection fee is charged to the buyer on top of the price. It does not reduce what you receive, but it does make your item cost the buyer more at checkout.

What does it cost to cash out?

Direct Deposit to your bank is $0, and a $2 fee applies to a failed deposit. Instant Pay costs $3 per cash-out and works for up to $600 a month.

Is there a fee for cancelling a sale?

Only if you cancel often. Mercari says it may charge 5% of the item price, up to $25, for frequent cancelations. You get warnings before a fee is charged.
