How to check you entered the right numbers

Check the result against a real order. On iOS or Android, go to Orders, select the order, then Receipt and earnings details. On Seller Hub web, go to Orders, open the order and scroll the right-hand panel (steps from Whatnot’s fees page). It shows the exact commission rate charged and the fee breakdown. Compare it with the calculator. If they match, your inputs are right.

Whatnot fees for US sellers

Whatnot charges two things on a sale: a commission and a payment processing fee. They work on different amounts, so it helps to see them side by side.

How Whatnot fees work in practice

Whatnot’s commission is charged on the item’s sale price only. Whatnot says shipping and taxes paid by the buyer are not included. That is good for sellers who charge shipping, because a headline rate of 8% on a$40.00 item is $3.20, however much the buyer pays for postage.

Payment processing is where shipping and tax come back in. The fee is 2.9% plus $0.30, and it is calculated on the total the buyer pays: item price, shipping and taxes. On $40.00 plus$6.00 shipping, that is $1.63. Together with commission, the total fee on that order is$4.83.

The commission rate is not one number. It changes with the category and with your tier. At the Standard tier Fashion, Sports, TCG, Other and Other Collectibles all start at 8%, while Coins starts at4%. Rates then fall as your four-week sales rise. Look at the rate table above to find your row.

Tiers reset every four weeks, and your rate is locked for the whole period. If you cross a threshold this period, you pay the old rate until the next one starts. Cancelled orders are subtracted from your total, so a big cancellation can affect the tier you get next. Whatnot’s help page has the full rules.

Lower commission does not reduce the processing fee. Whatnot says reduced rates apply to the selling commission only, so on a low-priced order the flat $0.30 still takes a big bite. Check small orders before you list them.

One thing this calculator leaves out on purpose: Whatnot sometimes runs promotions with temporary rates, and a limited-time offer has charged 0% on the part of an order above $1,500 in some categories. These can end without notice. Your real rate for any order is shown in the order’s receipt in Seller Hub.

Three worked examples

1. A $40 fashion item

Standard tier, so commission is 8% of $40.00, or $3.20. Processing is on $46.00, so it is $1.63. The buyer’s $6.00 shipping covers your label. You keep $35.17, before item cost.

2. A $100 coin with tax

Coins is 4% at Standard, so commission is $4.00. The buyer also pays $8.00 tax, so processing is on $113.00 and comes to $3.58. You keep $92.42, before item cost.

3. Standard tier versus Tier 3

A $60.00 fashion sale with $6.00 shipping. At Standard (8%) you keep $52.99. At Tier 3 (5.5%) you keep $54.49, which is $1.50 more. Processing is the same ($2.21).

Questions sellers ask

How much commission does Whatnot take in the US?

It depends on your category and your tier. At the Standard tier most categories are 8%, and Coins is 4%. Higher four-week sales unlock lower rates, down to 4.5% for Fashion at the top public tier.

Is commission charged on shipping and tax?

No. Whatnot says commission is calculated on the sale price of the item, and shipping and taxes paid by the buyer are not included.

What is the payment processing fee?

In the US it is 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. It is separate from commission and is calculated on the total order value, including buyer-paid shipping and taxes.

How does my tier work?

Your total sales across all categories over a four-week (28-day) period decide your tier for the next period. The rate is locked for the full period, so crossing a threshold lowers your rate from the next period, not straight away. Sales do not carry over between periods.

Does the lower commission also lower the processing fee?

No. Whatnot says reduced rates apply to the selling commission only. Payment processing and other seller fees still apply as usual.

Are there any promotions that change the commission?

Sometimes. For example, Whatnot has run a limited-time offer of 0% commission on the part of an order above $1,500 in certain categories. Promotions can change or end at any time, so this calculator uses the standard rate table. Check Seller Hub for any rate that applies to you.
