How Square fees work in practice

Square’s pricing has two parts: a monthly plan fee and a per-payment processing fee. Square Free costs $0 a month, so you only pay when you take a payment. Plus is $49 and Premium is $149 a month, per location, in exchange for lower processing rates.

The processing rate depends on how the customer pays. In person, a tap, dip or swipe is 2.6% + 15¢ on Free. Online it is 3.3% + 30¢. Typing in a card number or using a saved card is3.5% + 15¢ on every plan, which is the most expensive way to take a card, so send customers a payment link when you can.

The flat part of each fee hurts small sales. On a $10 online sale on the Free plan the fee is $0.63, which is 6.3% of the sale. On a $100 sale it is $3.60. If you sell lots of cheap items, look at the cost of each sale before you list.

Upgrading is a volume question. Moving from Free to Plus saves 0.4% on online sales, which pays for the $49 monthly fee at about $12,250.00 of online sales a month. In person the saving is only 0.1%, so you need about $49,000.00 a month to break even. At $5,000.00 a month online (100 sales) Free costs $195.00 against$224.00 for Plus. At $20,000.00 a month (400 sales), Free is$780.00 and Plus is $749.00. Use the plan finder above for your own figures, and remember it leaves out the software features each plan includes.

ACH bank transfers are the cheap option for big payments: 1% with a $1 minimum. Through an invoice the cap is $10 on Plus and Premium but there is no cap on Free, so a $2,000.00 payment costs $20.00 on Free and$10.00 on Plus. Afterpay is much dearer at 6% + 30¢, and cash is free.

These are Square’s standard rates. Square Pro offers custom pricing if you process over $250,000 a year. Instant transfers, disputes and hardware are priced elsewhere and are not in this calculator.

Three worked examples

1. A $50 tap payment on Square Free

The rate is 2.6% + 15¢, so the fee is $1.45 and you receive $48.55.

2. A $100 online sale: Free versus Plus

On Free the fee is $3.60 (3.3% + 30¢). On Plus it is $3.20 (2.9% + 30¢). Plus saves $0.40 on this sale, but costs $49 a month.

3. A $2,000 ACH invoice payment

1% of $2,000.00 is $20.00. On Free there is no cap, so you pay $20.00. On Plus the $10 cap applies, so you pay $10.00.
