What goes in each box?
Not sure what to type? Use this guide. If you do not have a number yet, use the example value and change it later.
| Box | What it means | Where to find it | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payment method | How the customer pays. Cards and wallets use the main rate. Klarna and ACH Direct Debit have their own rates. | The payment method shown on the payment in your Stripe Dashboard. | Card |
| Card add-ons | Tick “manually entered” if you typed the card number in yourself, “international” if the card was issued outside the US, and “currency conversion” if the customer paid in a different currency than you settle in. | The payment details in your Stripe Dashboard show the card country. Most online card payments tick none of these. | None |

How to check you entered the right numbers
Check the result against a real payment. Open the payment in your Stripe Dashboard and look at the fee and net amount shown. Compare the fee with the “Stripe fee” line in the calculator. If they match, your inputs are right.
Stripe’s US processing fees
Stripe’s standard pricing is pay as you go, with no setup fees or monthly fees. You pay per successful transaction, and the rate depends on how the customer pays.
| Fee | Rate | Charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic cards and wallets | 2.9% + $0.30 | per successful transaction |
| Add-on: manually entered cards | + 0.5% | added to the card rate |
| Add-on: international cards | + 1.5% | added to the card rate |
| Add-on: currency conversion required | + 1% | added when currency conversion is needed |
| Klarna (buy now, pay later) | 6% + $0.30 | per successful transaction |
| ACH Direct Debit | 0.8%, capped at $5.00 | per transaction |
| Dispute received fee | $15.00 | for each dispute you receive; network fees may also apply |

- Stripe’s pricing page says the fee is charged “per successful transaction”. It does not spell out whether the percentage applies to the total including tax and shipping. The calculator applies it to the total amount you charge the customer.
- These are Stripe’s standard (pay-as-you-go) US rates. Custom pricing, volume discounts and fees for other products (Billing, Invoicing, Connect, Terminal and others) are not included.
- Stripe says the processing fee from the original transaction is not returned when you refund a payment.
How Stripe fees work in practice
For most online sellers the number to remember is 2.9% plus $0.30 per successful card payment. The flat $0.30 matters most on small orders. On a $10 sale the fee is $0.59, or 5.9% of the sale, while on a $200 sale it is $6.10, or 3.05%.
Some payments cost more. Stripe adds 1.5% for international cards, 1%when currency conversion is needed, and 0.5% for manually entered cards. A $100 payment from a foreign card that also needs currency conversion costs $5.70 in fees, not $3.20, so you receive $94.30.
The calculator also covers the two common alternatives. Klarna costs 5.99% plus $0.30, much more than a card, which matters if your customers choose it. ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% capped at$5.00. On a $1,000.00 payment that is $5.00 by ACH, against $29.30 by card.
If you want to be paid a set amount, do not just add the percentage on top. To receive exactly $100.00 by card you need to charge $103.30, because Stripe takes its percentage from the larger total. Adding 2.9% and 30¢ to $100.00 gives $103.20, which leaves you $0.09 short. The reverse mode above does this sum for you.
Refunds and disputes are worth knowing about. Stripe says the processing fee from the original transaction is not returned when you refund. A dispute costs $15.00 when received, and responding manually adds another$15.00, returned only if you win. These are not in the calculator because they depend on what happens after the sale.
These are Stripe’s standard rates. If you have a custom pricing agreement, or you use other Stripe products such as Billing, Invoicing or Terminal, your fees can differ.
Three worked examples
1. A $50 domestic card payment
The fee is 2.9% of $50.00 plus $0.30, which is $1.75. You receive $48.25.
2. A $100 international card with currency conversion
The rate is 5.4% (2.9% + 1.5% + 1%) plus $0.30, so the fee is $5.70. You receive $94.30. A domestic card would have cost $3.20.
3. A $1,000 payment: card versus ACH
By card the fee is $29.30. By ACH it is 0.8%, or $8.00, but the cap brings it down to $5.00. ACH saves you $24.30 on this payment.
